The Society was formed in 1965 and was incorporated as a Company limited by guarantee in 1968. More recently, it had been granted recognition by the Revenue Commissioners as a Charity. The main objectives of the Society are to establish an operating steam museum with an associated collection of steam-powered and other agricultural machinery. These objectives have evolved over the years into three main activities, the annual steam rally, a working narrow gauge steam railway and a steam museum.
